What's his position (off the mound)?

RELIGION + LGBTQ+: Kershaw is a devout Christian. Most recently, he criticized the LA Dodgers for inviting the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an LGBTQ+ group that satirizes conservative Christian principles, to the team’s annual Pride Night as he found their practices – such as having men dress up as nuns – disrespectful toward his faith. In response to the Dodgers’ invitation, he announced the team would be bringing back Christian Faith and Family Day but stressed that his issues were with the Sisters specifically, not the LGBTQ+ community.

BLM: Kershaw admitted that previously, he hadn’t been very vocal about the BLM movement but supports the fight against systemic racism. In 2020, Kershaw led several of his teammates in a project to match funds raised from special edition LA Dodgers t-shirts to support the California Funders for Boys & Men of Color.

COVID-19: Although Kershaw has not openly stated his views on Covid-19, he mentioned in an interview with Los Angeles Times that he respects his teammates’ opinions, regardless of their decision to get vaccinated. Kershaw said that personally, he would get the Covid-19 vaccine for his and the team’s safety.

PHILANTHROPY: Kershaw raised over $200,000 to donate to “Hope’s Home”, an orphanage he started in Lusaka, Zambia and partnered with CURE International to raise funds for children’s surgeries and medical equipment in a Zambian hospital. Additionally, Kershaw raises money through his faith-based organization, “Kershaw’s Challenge”, and has donated to multiple charities in the USA and participated in programs addressing rehabilitation, at-risk youth, and mental health.

Kershaw scores a few liberal points for openly supporting BLM and his willingness to take the Covid vaccine, but he previously hesitated to speak up about BLM and didn’t necessarily encourage his teammates to get vaccinated. His support for the LGBTQ+ community has also been more passive than active. For these reasons, but especially his passive activism and protectiveness of his conservative values, Kershaw scores more conservative points for his political stance.
