Lady Justice Has You by The Balls

The WYJS logo can be read in a lotta ways. They are, after all, literal representations of figurative ideas…don’t think too hard about that or you’ll drop the ball. Just keep in mind that representation is up to interpretation AND representation matters (non-figuratively).

WE thought about our logo a lot. Logos are pretty important parts of rooting for a team. I mean, explicitly they function to bring fans together—to identify with each other. And simultaneously logos function to divide fans from each other—to disidentify fans of one team from another.

It’s difficult to ever cap meaning with representations, with symbols–though historical context and visual culture can sure help guide how audiences see. We want to take some of this ambiguity out of our readers’s control and help them appreciate our logo and decision-making process.

Though it might be said less crassly (which just isn’t as memorable), the main message of the WYJS logo is this: Lady Justice Has You by The Balls.

And that message itself means a lot, but we wanna cap it with two really important things our audience should keep in mind, figuratively and literally:

  1. Literally Figurative Balls: The logo is a satire of other logos (NBA and MLB) and Lady Justice. Since WYJS intends to hold sports participants (balls and bat) accountable for politics and behaviors. Balls are being weighed for justice, and the bat is the power to mete out that justice.
  2. Figuratively Literal Balls: Let’s Freud this up: The logo is Lady Justice in power holding balls (testicles) and a bat (penis). Consider this logo as a challenge to the patriarchy of sports and the ways men dominate the industry in ways that perpetuate their dominance.

We understand this isn’t the only way to read our logo and we welcome more comments and interpretations in the comments. Mainly, we hope these caps help you identify and disidentify with our project. We hope it gives you a better idea of how we think about justice in sports. And with a name like Jock Support, we hope you’ll join us in embracing the innuendo.
